Imagine

Posted April 11, 2012

Jesus wasn't a Christian and for that matter Lao Tzu wasn't a Taoist and Buddha wasn't a Buddhist. Like all enlightened beings they walked their own path, and they had no use for religion, politics, creeds, or any other form of "right and wrong" as defined by society.

Once Jesus was asked, "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?"He replied, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.  All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

Imagine for a moment, a single moment, a world where we all loved each other - regardless of race, creed, culture, or economic status – a world where your needs are as important to me as my needs are to me – a world where everyone supports everyone else, totally, and unconditionally.  Just imagine….

Utopia!! It would be heaven wouldn't it Bert?

Could not agree more. Most conflict comes from focusing on differences. What would happen if we put our attention on similarities.

And then it would become second nature because in so doing we would experience ourselves as One, with unique forms of expression, but still One.

Unfortunately, into a world where we really should love each other there comes the six basic plots that drive all great fiction: love, hate, greed, power, ambition, and jealousy. And all that does is leave you and John Lennon to imagine...

I agree with Tom Lehrer. I recognize that the world would be a much better place, as you say, if we all learned to love one another, and I do. However, there are people who don't, and I hate people like that

Bert, I've had this discussion with a lot of people down through the years, and I think the summary of all those conversations is that somewhere in the discussion someone always says, "But love only goes just so far." That border on love is usually the point where they are ready to draw their guns and take matters into their own hands. Somehow we can't convince ourselves that love is actually the best way, the way that is more powerful than bullets.

@David. Ah, but WHOSE heaven? (Sorry, I couldn't resist.) Seriously, when I read about religious wars, I wonder, OK, where in your version of "the book" does it say, "Kill anyone who disagrees with Me."

Couldn't have said it any better. You are right on. A world where race, religion, color, beliefs, etc don't matter is what we are hoping for.

@Jack, forget the people who don't. I agree, despite how much we would like to live in that world, we'll sadly never see it. However, there is certainly room for improvement and that is what we must strive for!
